America’s Navy covertly recruits the top 1%—redditors
-
America’s Navy needed to recruit exceptional candidates for its Naval Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate (NUPOC) Program—a role for which fewer than 1% of Americans qualify. The task was not simply to reach more people. It was to find the rare people with the interests, skills, and grit to thrive beneath the surface.

VML partnered with KarmaLab to turn the recruiting challenge into a Reddit-native test of depth, curiosity, and grit.
Over five weeks, STEM-oriented redditors faced five challenges embedded across five ad formats, each designed to mirror the problem-solving mindset required of a NUKE.
Participants submitted answers directly to u/AmericasNavy, and those who completed the full hunt were honored in a custom video celebrating their commitment. The campaign transformed media into a qualification experience—and earned two Cannes Lions for its inventive use of audience behavior, creative data, and community engagement.
